Short answer: no, only the preview shrinks

Does Google Drive compress photos?

No. Google Drive stores the complete file you upload, and only the Drive preview is a scaled-down version of it, which is why a photo can look slightly different until you download it. Google Photos is the one that can shrink photos: its Storage saver setting resizes anything over 16 MP to 16 MP.

Why a photo in Drive can look different from the original

Clicking a photo in Drive opens a preview, not the file. Google describes the Drive preview as a scaled-down version of the complete file that may look slightly different when opened. The file itself is whole, so judge sharpness on a downloaded copy, not on the preview.

To check, download the photo and read its pixel dimensions with the photo file checker, or compare it with your own copy in the file comparison tool. Matching fingerprints mean the two files are identical.

Google Photos is where quality can drop

Google Photos and Google Drive draw on the same 15 GB of free Google Account storage, but they treat photos differently. Google Photos backs up in one of three qualities:

  • Original quality keeps the resolution you took the photo with.
  • Storage saver compresses photos and resizes anything over 16 MP to 16 MP.
  • Express resizes photos over 3 MP to 3 MP, where it is offered.

Original quality and Storage saver both count toward your storage. Google Photos also has a Recover storage option that converts photos already backed up in Original quality to Storage saver, so skip it for photos you need at full size.

Sharing a Google Drive folder with a client

  1. Upload the finished photos to one folder

Every file you upload counts toward your Drive storage, even inside a folder someone else owns.

  2. Set general access to Anyone with the link

Share the folder as Viewer with Anyone with the link. Your client can then open the folder and every file in it without signing in to a Google Account, and files you add later get the same access.

  3. Decide whether viewers can download

Viewers and commenters can download by default. You can turn that off in the sharing settings, which also stops them printing and copying.

  4. Tell your client how to download

On drive.google.com they click a photo, Ctrl-click (Windows) or Command-click (Mac) the others, then right-click and choose Download. If they block third-party cookies in Chrome, Drive downloads fail until they allow them for Drive.

What to know before you send a Drive link

Anyone who opens the link sees your name and email address as the owner of the files. Expiration dates on shared access are only available on eligible work or school accounts, so a personal Drive link stays open until you change the sharing. And if many people view or download the same file, Drive can temporarily refuse views and downloads with Too many users have viewed or downloaded this file recently; the limit typically resets within 24 hours.

For handing a finished shoot to a client, a gallery link does more of the work. On shoots.page your client browses a thumbnail grid and 2000 px previews, then downloads the exact files you uploaded, one at a time or as a ZIP, when you allow it. No account on their side, an optional password and expiry date, free up to 2 GB. The Google Drive comparison goes through the differences.

Common questions

Does Google Drive reduce photo resolution?
No. Drive stores the complete file you upload. The preview you see in Drive is scaled down, so download the file before you judge its sharpness or pixel dimensions.
Does downloading from Google Drive give me the original photo?
Yes. A download saves the complete file stored in Drive, not the preview. Compare it with your own copy in the file comparison tool to confirm the two are identical.
Is Google Drive or Google Photos better for full-quality photos?
Drive keeps the file as you uploaded it. Google Photos keeps full quality only with Original quality backup; Storage saver resizes photos over 16 MP to 16 MP. Both use the same 15 GB of free storage.
Can clients download from a shared Google Drive folder without a Google account?
Yes, if the folder is shared with Anyone with the link. They can open every file without signing in, and viewers can download unless you turn downloads off.
Why does Google Drive say too many users have downloaded a file?
It is a temporary Drive limit on files that many people have viewed or downloaded recently, and it typically resets within 24 hours. To avoid it, Google suggests file owners share with specific Google Groups rather than public links, and host large media files on Google Cloud Storage or a dedicated service.
Can a Google Drive link expire?
Only on eligible work or school accounts, which can set an expiration date on shared access. On a personal account the link stays active until you change the sharing settings.
