Email limits, October 2026

How many photos can you send in an email?

There is no photo limit, only a size cap: about 4 to 6 photos of 4 MB fit in a 25 MB email (Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail), 3 to 5 in iCloud Mail's 20 MB. For 100 photos or more, shoots.page puts them behind one gallery link, free up to 2 GB, with no account needed to open it.

About how many photos fit in one email

25 MB covers Gmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo Mail. 2, 4 and 8 MB are example sizes. The lower number leaves room for encoding, which makes an email about 33% larger than its files.

Why the number depends on your photos

Email services don't count photos. They measure the size of the whole message, so the number you can send depends on how big each file is. The same 25 MB holds a dozen small photos or two large ones.

There is also a hidden cost. Email encodes attachments as text, and Microsoft's documentation says that makes a message about 33% larger. 18 MB of photos becomes about 24 MB on the way out, so keep your photos to about three quarters of the limit: about 18 MB for a 25 MB email, about 15 MB for iCloud Mail. The other end matters too. Apple notes that the recipient's email app might have a smaller size limit that stops the attachment from arriving.

Attach several photos at once

  1. iPhone

Open the Photos app, tap Select, tap the photos you want, tap the Share button and choose Mail. If the email is bigger than your account allows, Mail offers to send the photos with Mail Drop instead.

  2. Gmail

On a computer, click Compose, click Attach at the bottom, select the photos and click Open, or drag them into the compose window. In the Gmail app, tap Compose, then Attach at the top right, and pick photos up to 5 at a time. Repeat to add more.

  3. Outlook.com

Select Attach, then Browse this computer. Hold Ctrl (Command on a Mac) to select several photos and select Open. You can also drag the photos into the message.

When you have 100 photos or more

Attachments stop making sense fast. 100 photos of 4 MB come to about 400 MB, which is about 17 to 25 separate 25 MB emails. 250 photos are about 1 GB, or about 42 to 63 emails. Nobody wants to receive that.

Send a link instead. Gmail already turns oversized attachments into a Google Drive link, Outlook.com shares files from OneDrive, and iPhone Mail offers Mail Drop for up to 5 GB, with 30 days to download. Those are the right picks for a mix of photos and videos.

For a photo set going to a group, where each person only wants the shots they are in, a gallery link is easier on the people opening it. With shoots.page you upload the photos once and paste one link into your email. Recipients open a grid of thumbnails, 60 per page, with no account, app or sign-up, and save single photos or the whole set as a ZIP when you allow downloads. It is free up to 2 GB per account, about 500 photos of 4 MB, and it takes photos only, no video. If your photos are too big to attach at all, read photos too large for email.

Common questions

How do I send 100 pics by email?
Not as attachments: 100 photos of 4 MB are about 400 MB, or about 17 to 25 separate emails. Put them behind one link instead, such as a Google Drive or OneDrive link, Mail Drop on an iPhone, or a shoots.page gallery, and send that link in one email.
How many JPEG photos can be sent via email?
It depends on file size, not format. A 25 MB email holds about 9 to 12 photos of 2 MB, 4 to 6 of 4 MB, or 2 to 3 of 8 MB. iCloud Mail's 20 MB limit fits a little less.
How do I send 20 pictures in one email?
Only if they are small: in a 25 MB email each photo has to be about 1 MB or less. 20 photos of 2 MB are about 40 MB, so send 2 or 3 emails or one link instead.
How do I attach multiple photos from my iPhone to an email?
Open Photos, tap Select, tap the photos you want, tap the Share button and choose Mail. If the email is over your account's limit, Mail offers to send the photos with Mail Drop, which handles up to 5 GB.
How do I send 250 photos in an email?
Use a link, not attachments. 250 photos of 4 MB are about 1 GB, which would take about 42 to 63 separate emails. 1 GB fits in one Mail Drop (up to 5 GB) or in a free shoots.page gallery (up to 2 GB per account).
What is the best way to send a bunch of photos in an email?
If the photos add up to less than about 18 MB, attach them (about 15 MB for iCloud Mail). Above that, send one link: a cloud drive link for a mix of photos and videos, or a gallery link when a group should browse the photos and save their own.
