Short answer: yes, media is usually compressed

Does WhatsApp compress photos?

Yes. WhatsApp's help center says media is usually compressed when shared, so a photo can arrive at lower quality than the original. HD quality is clearer than Standard quality but uses more data, and attaching the photo as a Document sends it as a file of up to 2 GB instead.

As a photo, any qualityMedia is usually compressed when shared, so it can arrive at lower quality than the original.
Standard qualityUses less data and sends faster than HD.
HD qualityClearer than Standard, but uses more data and takes longer to send. Your connection still affects the quality.
As a DocumentSent as a file you pick from your phone, up to 2 GB. The Standard or HD choice is for photos and videos.
Status update or profile pictureHD is not available.

How to send a photo in the best quality WhatsApp offers

  1. Choose HD for this photo

Attach the photo, tap the HD icon and pick HD quality before you tap send.

  2. Or make HD the default

Open Settings, then Storage and data, then Media upload quality, and select HD quality. You can still pick Standard quality for a single photo.

  3. Or send the photo as a Document

Tap the attach icon, choose Document and pick the photo file from your phone. Documents can be up to 2 GB.

  4. Check what arrived

Save the received copy and compare it with your original in the file comparison tool. It tells you whether the two files are identical, without uploading either one.

When WhatsApp is the wrong tool

WhatsApp is quick for a few photos. For a whole shoot it gets awkward: you can pick up to 100 images at a time from the gallery, and WhatsApp itself notes there might be an issue when sending a large number of photos at once.

A gallery link avoids both. Paste one shoots.page link into the chat, and your client browses 2000 px previews and downloads the original files, one at a time or as a ZIP when you allow it, with no account. It is free up to 2 GB.

Common questions

Does WhatsApp HD send the original photo?
WhatsApp does not say it does. It describes HD quality as clearer than Standard, using more data and taking longer to send, and notes that your internet connection still affects quality in HD. Its help center also says shared media is usually compressed. If the exact file matters, send a link to the original instead.
Does WhatsApp compress photos sent as documents?
The help pages we checked describe the Standard and HD choice only for photos and videos, and list documents as files of up to 2 GB. To be certain, compare the sent and received files in the file comparison tool: identical files have the same SHA-256 fingerprint.
How do I turn on HD by default on WhatsApp?
Go to Settings, then Storage and data, then Media upload quality, and select HD quality. You can still send single photos in Standard quality.
Can I upgrade a photo I already sent to HD?
No. WhatsApp can't upgrade the quality of a photo you have already sent, but you can send it again in HD quality.
Does WhatsApp compress videos too?
Yes. WhatsApp says media files are usually compressed when shared, and videos have a default size limit: 100 MB at 720p on a faster connection, 64 MB at 480p on a slower one. You can choose HD quality for videos too.
How many photos can I send at once on WhatsApp?
You can select up to 100 images from the gallery. WhatsApp notes there might be an issue when sending a large number of photos at once and suggests sending fewer at a time.
