The rule of thumb
When you have a whole set or the other person is far away, send a shoots.page gallery link instead of attachments; on iOS 26 or earlier an iCloud link works for a handful. If you are standing next to someone with an Apple device, use AirDrop. For a few photos by email, attach them and stay under your provider's 25 MB limit, or let Mail Drop carry bigger attachments.
Texts and direct messages are fine when someone only needs a glance on their phone, not for a print or a photo book.

For dozens or hundreds of photos, attachments get messy. With a shoots.page gallery link, you upload the set and share one link. Anyone opening it can browse 2000 px previews on a phone, tablet or computer and, if you allow it, download the original JPEG or HEIC files byte for byte, with no app or account.

AirDrop, Mail and iCloud links, step by step
For sharing in person, select your photos in the Photos app, tap Share, tap Options and turn on All Photos Data, then tap AirDrop and pick the other person's device. Apple says All Photos Data shares the original file with its edit history and metadata. In the same Options, Current prevents a file format conversion.
By email, the limit is usually your provider's: 25 MB of attachments in Gmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo Mail. For bigger attachments, Mail Drop uploads files up to 5 GB to iCloud, and the recipient has 30 days to download them.
To share with someone far away on iOS 26 or earlier, select the photos, tap Share and tap Copy iCloud Link, then paste the link into any message or email. Apple says the link stays available for 30 days. On iOS 27, send a shoots.page gallery link instead.
Common questions
Why do my photos look blurry when I text them?
Messaging apps can compress photos so chats stay fast and use less data. WhatsApp says shared media is usually compressed, and Apple says iPhone may compress attachments in Messages when necessary. A compressed copy looks fine in a chat but soft when you crop or print it.
Does AirDrop reduce photo quality?
Turn on All Photos Data under Options before you AirDrop, and Apple says the original file is shared with its edit history and metadata. Apple also notes that HEIF photos might be shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG; choosing Current under Options prevents a file format conversion.
How do I send a whole event's worth of photos?

Do iCloud links expire?
