Where the transfer model breaks for client work

Free and Starter transfers stay online for up to 3 days. When a client opens your download email the following week, the link has already expired. You find the files again, upload them again and send a fresh link.

The free allowance is built for occasional sends: up to 10 transfers or 3 GB in total in any rolling 30-day window. A few deliveries in a busy month can use it up, and then you wait or upgrade.

The page your client lands on is also built around files. WeTransfer shows previews and lets recipients comment on or favorite single files, but it is still a list meant for downloading. A client gallery presents the shoot as a set: a thumbnail grid, a 2000 px viewer, and a pick limit with a running total for extras. For personal sends, yes. WeTransfer Free allows up to 10 transfers or 3 GB in total in any rolling 30-day window, and WeTransfer limits it to individual, non-commercial use, so paid client work needs a paid plan. Free transfers stay online for up to 3 days, so a client who opens the email a week later finds an expired link.

How long do WeTransfer links last?

Up to 3 days on the Free and Starter plans. On Ultimate, transfers stay online as long as you like, with a custom expiry date or none. Files uploaded through someone's branded WeTransfer page stay available for 30 days.

Does WeTransfer compress photos?

No. WeTransfer says it sends files exactly as they are, with no compression, no re-encoding and no loss of resolution, and several files are bundled in a lossless ZIP. For photographers, the limits are the 3-day link and the free allowance, not image quality.

Do my clients need an account to download?

No, on either service. On shoots.page, clients open the gallery link, browse and download the files you allow without creating an account or logging in. On WeTransfer, recipients download or preview files without registering.

What happens when a WeTransfer link expires?

The recipient can no longer download the files. On Free and Starter there is no recovery, so you upload and send the files again. On Ultimate, Teams and Enterprise you can recover an expired transfer if the Recoverable option was on (it is by default): files under 256 MiB for up to one year after expiry, larger files for up to 90 days.
