Storage estimates by file size

How many photos fit in 1 GB?

1 GB holds about 125 photos at 8 MB or 40 RAW files at 25 MB, and shoots.page gives you 2 GB free. Your exact count depends on your camera, file format and settings, so treat every number here as an estimate.

Photos in 1 GB by average file size

Photos = 1,000 MB divided by the average file size. The examples come from Canon, Nikon and Apple figures listed under Sources.

How to work out photos per GB

Divide 1,000 MB by your average file size in megabytes. At 2 MB, 1 GB holds 500 photos. At 4 MB it holds 250, at 8 MB 125, at 25 MB 40 and at 50 MB 20.

Storage makers count 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Some apps and operating systems count 1 GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes instead, so the same 1,000,000,000 bytes shows up there as about 0.93 GB.

Every number here is an estimate. Canon notes that file size changes with shooting conditions such as cropping or aspect ratio, subject, ISO speed, Picture Style and Custom Functions. Two sets from the same camera can differ in size. To size a real set, add up the files or use the gallery size calculator.

Real camera files in 1 GB

Camera makers publish file sizes, and they show how much the camera shifts the count. A 24-megapixel Canon EOS R6 Mark II makes 8.2 MB JPEGs at Large Fine, so 1 GB holds about 121 of them, or about 38 of its 26.1 MB RAW files. At Large Normal its JPEGs are 4.4 MB.

A 45-megapixel Canon EOS R5 makes 13.5 MB Large Fine JPEGs and 45.4 MB RAW files. A 45.7-megapixel Nikon Z8 makes 19.0 MB Large fine JPEGs and 51.6 MB lossless RAW files, which is about 19 RAWs in 1 GB.

On an iPhone, Apple puts a 12 MP ProRAW photo at about 25 MB, or 40 per GB, and a 48 MP ProRAW photo at about 75 MB, or 13 per GB. For more on what drives these sizes, read how many MB is a photo.

Is 1 GB enough for a client gallery?

It is if your set is small: 1 GB holds about 125 finished JPEGs at 8 MB. Bigger sets add up quickly. 1,000 photos at 8 MB take 8 GB, and 1,000 RAW files at 25 MB take 25 GB.

On shoots.page you upload a finished set and share one gallery link. Your client browses and downloads without an account. The free plan gives you 2 GB of storage, about 250 JPEGs at 8 MB or 80 RAW files at 25 MB, as the 2 GB guide works out. For larger work, Pro has 100 GB for USD 9 a month.

Storage is the only cap: there is no limit on the number of galleries or on photos per gallery. Only the bytes of the files you upload count. Previews, thumbnails and the full-size JPEGs made from RAW files are not counted.

Common questions

How many phone pictures fit in 1 GB?
About 400 to 500, if a regular 12 MP iPhone HEIF or JPEG is roughly 2 to 2.5 MB, which is what Apple's own numbers work out to. In 12 MP ProRAW at about 25 MB, 1 GB holds 40 photos; in 48 MP ProRAW at about 75 MB, it holds 13.
How many RAW photos fit in 1 GB?
About 40 at 25 MB each. A Canon EOS R6 Mark II fits about 38 of its 26.1 MB RAW files, and a Nikon Z8 about 19 of its 51.6 MB lossless RAW files.
Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?
Storage makers count 1 GB as 1,000 MB, or 1,000,000,000 bytes. Some apps and operating systems use 1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, so the same storage shows as about 0.93 GB there.
How many GB do you need for 1,000 photos?
About 8 GB for 1,000 JPEGs at 8 MB each, and about 25 GB for 1,000 RAW files at 25 MB each.
Do previews count toward shoots.page storage?
No. Only the bytes of the files you upload count. The thumbnails and previews made for every photo, and the full-size JPEGs made from RAW files, don't use your storage.
