The short answer

Nine published packages that include 20 photos range from $175 to $500 with the session included. Seven of the nine sit between $300 and $400, and the middle price is $350. Per photo, that is about $9 to $25.

What moves the price: session length and outfits, studio time, how much retouching each photo gets and, for commercial work, usage rights. The per-image and editing-only ranges below are the other two ways photographers price the same 20 photos.

If you price per image

WhatShouldICharge's per-image guide says photographers who charge per image typically price $25 to $150 per edited photo: $25 to $60 for product and e-commerce images, $50 to $100 for editorial and portrait, and $100 to $500+ for advertising, depending on usage rights. At those rates, 20 photos come to $500 to $3,000, or $1,000 to $2,000 at the portrait rate, before any session fee.

Its family portrait example: the client picks 10 images from 150 proofs, and a $200 session fee plus 10 edited images at $55 each comes to $750. The same rates for 20 images would be $1,300. That is well above the packages in the table, so check which model your clients actually buy.

If you only edit someone else's photos

Xposure's photo-editing price guide lists basic color and exposure work at $1 to $5 an image, standard portrait retouching (skin, stray hairs, blemishes) at $15 to $40, and high-end beauty or commercial retouching at $75 to $250, and recommends pricing per image, not per hour. For 20 photos, that is $20 to $100 for basic edits, $300 to $800 for portrait retouching and $1,500 to $5,000 for high-end work.

Work out your own floor

Knackdesk's cost-per-edited-image calculator gives the method: add your shoot hours and editing hours, multiply by your hourly rate, and divide by the number of images you deliver. That is your cost per image. For extras, it multiplies that cost by one plus your markup. Run your own numbers for a 20-photo package before you copy anyone's price.

Price the photos past 20

Published prices for one extra edited image, mostly from mini-session offers, run from $10 to $100: Devin Desjarlais charges $10, Ereka Rignell Photography $12.50, Lindsay Renee $20, Rachel Stelter Photography $75 per digital added to a collection, and Petite Sessions $100. For typical included counts, see how many photos in a mini session.

Sell 20 included photos with a shoots.page proofing gallery

  1. Upload the proofs

Upload the set the client will choose from to one gallery. WhatShouldICharge's example client chose from 150 proofs; at about 8 MB per exported JPEG, 150 photos are about 1.2 GB, inside the free 2 GB.

  2. Set max picks to 20

Turn on proofing for the gallery and set max picks to 20. The default is 25, so change it.

  3. Price the extras

Turn on extras and enter your per-photo price and currency. The client sees a live "n of 20" count and a running price for every pick past 20.

  4. Get the locked selection

The client submits with name and email, and the submission locks until you reopen it. shoots.page shows the price but never collects payment or takes a commission, so you bill the client and get paid yourself. For the difference between proofing and final delivery, see delivery vs proofing.
