What PhotoShelter covers
PhotoShelter calls itself an image storage and delivery solution for individual photographers: share, store and sell photos in one place. It combines website templates, SEO and social sharing tools, and an online archive with a geographically redundant backup strategy that you can search by keywords and metadata. Customizable download permissions, right-click protection and custom watermarks guard your files.
Built-in e-commerce sells prints, products, downloads and licenses. You upload through the web or desktop uploader or with plug-ins for Lightroom and Photo Mechanic, and there are mobile apps. This page covers PhotoShelter for Photographers; PhotoShelter for Brands is a separate asset management product for companies.
Where delivery gets harder on PhotoShelter
There is no free plan, and the 14-day trial turns into the regular fee automatically unless you cancel. Basic gives you 4 GB and leaves out the client proofing tool, so collecting picks starts at Standard, $25 a month billed annually or $29.99 monthly. If you only hand over finished files, you still pay for a website builder, a store and an archive you may not use.
Each delivery also takes a few decisions. You switch on download buttons in your archive settings, choose the largest file size clients may download, and pick between a password, named clients who log in to a free PhotoShelter account, or open access. Quick Send skips logins, but its links work for one week. RAW files are treated as archival: galleries show them as resized JPGs made from the preview embedded in each file.
Where PhotoShelter clearly wins
- You want a portfolio website on your own domain, with SEO and social sharing tools.
- You sell prints, products, downloads and licenses from the same account.
- You want an online archive with geographically redundant backup, searchable by keywords and metadata.
- You upload with the Lightroom or Photo Mechanic plug-in.
- You want custom watermarks, right-click protection and download limits on galleries.
- You store PSD, PDF, EPS and SVG files next to your photos.
Where shoots.page fits
- You want a free plan: 2 GB with every delivery feature, or 100 GB on Pro for USD 9 a month (EUR 8 in Europe).
- Clients open one link and download without an account, an app or a sign-in.
- Proofing is on every plan, with a pick limit you set and optional paid extras.
- Three download switches per gallery: originals, 2000 px JPEGs and the untouched RAW files.
- Each RAW gets a full-size JPEG for client downloads, and those JPEGs don't count toward your storage.
- No sales fee, no per-gallery charge, and clients never pay.
Using both
Keep PhotoShelter for your website, print store or archive, and send a shoots.page link when a client needs the finished set or has picks to make. shoots.page is for delivery, not an archive or a backup service, so keep your library where it is.
