What happens when you upload RAW

  1. Pick your RAW files

    You pick RAW files on the homepage. Your draft stays in your browser until you sign in with Google and send.

  2. Upload with resume

    Uploads run in resumable 8 MiB parts, so you can leave mid-upload and pick up right where you stopped.

  3. Previews render in the background

    The server renders a 480 px thumbnail, a 2000 px JPEG preview and a full-size JPEG for downloads from each RAW file in the background. See how this works in our guide on photo preview vs. original files.

  4. Publish one link

    Clients open it with no account or app required, browse 60-photo grid pages, and download files based on the toggles you turn on.

JPEGs for clients, RAW files when someone edits

A RAW file is the unedited capture and needs a RAW-capable app, which most clients do not have. So when a client downloads a RAW photo, on its own or in the ZIP, they get a full-size JPEG of it that opens on any phone or computer, ready to print, post or send on. Learn more about original downloads.

When an art director, retoucher or second shooter needs the RAW data, turn on Allow RAW downloads in the gallery settings. They can then also download each RAW exactly as you uploaded it, one by one or as a RAW ZIP. Your own downloads in the app always give you the RAW. The original, JPEG and RAW download switches each cover single-file saves and the full ZIP download.

Common questions

Can clients view RAW photos without special software?
Yes. When you upload a RAW file, shoots.page creates a 2000 px JPEG preview and a full-size JPEG in the background. Clients browse the preview in any browser, and an original download gives them the full-size JPEG, so they never need a RAW converter or camera utility.
Do clients get the RAW files?
Only if you want them to. By default they download a full-size JPEG of each RAW. Turn on Allow RAW downloads in the gallery settings to offer the RAW files as well; they are stored byte-for-byte, so each RAW download is the identical file you uploaded.
Which RAW formats work?
CR2, NEF and DNG are verified. Uploads also take CR3, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2, PEF and other camera RAW files, which shoots.page processes with LibRaw.
How big is the JPEG, and when is it ready?
It is full size, saved as an sRGB JPEG at quality 92. shoots.page makes it in the background after the upload; until it is ready, a download gives the 2000 px JPEG instead.
