Pixels, 4:5 ratio and cropping

What resolution is an 8x10 print?

An 8x10 print needs 2400 x 3000 pixels at 300 PPI, and a full-size 24 MP original delivered through shoots.page has plenty to spare. The print is 4:5, so a 3:2 photo loses 16.7% of its long side to the crop.

8x10 in pixels

Pixels = inches x PPI. Nations Photo Lab lists 2400 x 3000 at 300 PPI; Mpix lists 2000 x 2500 as optimal and prints at 250 ppi.

The 8x10 aspect ratio

8:10 reduces to 4:5, a long side 1.25 times the short side. A 3:2 camera frame is 1.5 times as long as it is wide, so it is longer than an 8x10. Mpix notes that "digital cameras shoot with an aspect ratio that is similar to that of a 4x6 rather than the 8x10". The whole frame won't fill the paper, so either the photo is cropped or the print gets borders.

Resolution is the easy part: 2400 x 3000 pixels covers an 8x10 at 300 PPI, and the 300 DPI guide has the numbers for other print sizes.

A 3:2 photo cropped to 4:5

The crop keeps the full short side and 83.3% of the long side.

How much of a 3:2 photo an 8x10 crops

Keep the full short side and the long side has to drop from 1.5 to 1.25 times the short side. That keeps 1.25 / 1.5 = 83.3% of the long side and trims 16.7%; a center crop takes half of that from each end. A 6000 x 4000 frame becomes 5000 x 4000, still 500 PPI at 10 x 8 inches.

If you don't crop, the lab decides. Mpix prints by center crop: "if the aspect ratio of the image file is different than the aspect ratio of the print size ordered, the image will be placed on the print such that the entire print area is covered with image, with any excess being cropped off from the center outward." Fitting the whole 3:2 frame on 8x10 paper instead makes the image 10 x 6.67 inches, with 1.33 inches of the 8-inch side left as border.

What to deliver for an 8x10

If the composition matters, crop to 4:5 yourself, or leave room around the subject when you shoot so a lab's center crop doesn't cut into it. Either way, deliver full-resolution files; the Lightroom export guide covers the settings.

In a shoots.page gallery, clients browse previews up to 2000 px on the long edge, and the JPEG download is that same preview. Cropped to 4:5, a 2000 x 1333 preview is about 1666 x 1333, about 167 PPI at 8x10. So for an 8x10, clients should use the Originals download, on by default, which is the exact file you uploaded at full resolution. There is no limit on photos per gallery, so you can add 4:5 exports of the selects next to the full frames.

Common questions

What is the aspect ratio of an 8x10?
4:5. The long side is 1.25 times the short side, while a 3:2 camera frame is 1.5 times.
How many pixels do I need for an 8x10?
2400 x 3000 pixels at 300 PPI, or 7.2 megapixels. At 250 PPI it is 2000 x 2500, and at 200 PPI 1600 x 2000.
Will my photo be cropped for an 8x10?
A 3:2 photo will be, by 16.7% of its long side, unless you print it with borders. Labs such as Mpix crop from the center outward if you don't crop it yourself.
Can I print an 8x10 from a phone photo?
Yes, if you use the full-size file. A 4:3 photo of 4032 x 3024 pixels, about 12 MP, cropped to 4:5 is 3780 x 3024, which is 378 PPI at 8x10.
What is the difference between 8x10 and 8x12?
An 8x12 is 2:3, the same shape as a 3:2 camera frame, so the whole photo prints. An 8x10 is 4:5, so 16.7% of the long side is cropped or left as border.
