The short answer

Panasonic cameras save RAW data in their own .RW2 format. SILKYPIX Developer Studio SE, free RAW software made only for Panasonic cameras, converts RW2 files to JPEG. darktable, RawTherapee, Photos on a Mac and Adobe Lightroom Classic work too.

If the JPGs are for a client, skip the conversion on your computer. A shoots.page gallery accepts the RW2 files, makes a full-size JPEG of each in the background, and your client downloads them from one link.

Convert RW2 to JPG with SILKYPIX Developer Studio SE

SILKYPIX Developer Studio SE Version is made by Ichikawa Soft Laboratory for Panasonic digital cameras, and covers every Panasonic camera that records RAW apart from the DMC-LC1, DMC-FZ30 and DMC-LX1. Windows and macOS downloads are on the SE site at isl.co.jp.

To make JPEGs, use the convert to JPEG or TIFF button on the toolbar. The development settings let you choose sRGB or AdobeRGB as the color space before you convert.

For a camera that isn't on the list, the maker advises buying a product version of SILKYPIX Developer Studio. One paid option is SILKYPIX Developer Studio Pro12 for Panasonic: 6,930 JPY including tax for the Windows download, a single purchase with no monthly fee.

Other ways to convert RW2

  • Photos on a Mac: Apple's RAW list for macOS 27 includes Panasonic models such as the DC-S5, DC-S5M2 and DC-GH6. Select your photos, choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos, set Photo Kind to JPEG, choose JPEG Quality and Size, and click Export.
  • Windows: Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension lets File Explorer show RW2 thumbnails and metadata and the Photos app open the files, on Windows 10 version 1903 or later. It is a codec built on LibRaw, not a converter.
  • darktable: free and open source under GPLv3 or later, for Windows, Linux and macOS 13.5 or later (no Intel Mac builds). Its camera list includes the DC-S5. The export module writes the selected images in a background job.
  • RawTherapee: a free, cross-platform RAW processing program under GPLv3, now at version 5.13.
  • Adobe Lightroom Classic: paid, on an Adobe plan with a free trial. Select photos in Grid view, choose File > Export, pick Export To Hard Drive, select JPEG and a color space under File Settings, set Image Sizing and click Export.

For every format, see RAW to JPG; for whole folders, see how to batch convert RAW to JPG.

RW2 to JPG for a client, with shoots.page

When the photos are for someone else, you don't need a desktop export:

  1. Select your RW2 files on the shoots.page homepage.
  2. Sign in with Google. It's free.
  3. Upload. Files go up in resumable 8 MiB parts, so a dropped connection picks up where it left off.
  4. Previews generate, then a full-size JPEG of every RW2 is made in the background.
  5. Publish and share the unlisted link (https://shoots.page/g/...), with an optional password and expiry date.

The Originals switch is on by default, so every RW2 downloads as a full-size JPEG, singly or through Download all photos: P1000001.RW2 downloads as P1000001.jpg. For the full-size JPEGs yourself, open the published link and click Download all photos.

The Free plan's 2 GB holds about 80 RAWs at 25 MB each. Only the files you upload count; the JPEGs made from them don't. Your client never needs an account.

The trade-offs

  • No edits: LibRaw 0.22.1 renders the RAW with the camera's white balance, a standard demosaic and upright rotation, with no lens or chromatic-aberration correction and no Photo Style. shoots.page refuses .xmp sidecars and ignores catalog edits. If you edited, export JPEGs from Lightroom or your editor and upload those.
  • Embedded camera JPEG: if an RW2 holds a camera JPEG of at least 90% of full size, shoots.page may use it instead of decoding the RAW.
  • Fixed output: quality 92, sRGB, with an embedded sRGB ICC profile. No quality, size or format options.
  • Trimmed EXIF: camera make, model and capture date and time stay. GPS, lens and exposure data are removed.
  • Background processing: until the full-size JPEG is ready, a download is the 2000 px preview under the same .jpg name.
  • Limits: a file over 1 GiB, or a RAW over 100 megapixels such as a multi-shot high-resolution file above that size, fails processing and must be removed before you publish. Export those to JPEG on your computer and upload the JPEGs.

If your client needs the untouched camera files, turn on the RAW switch to send the RW2 files themselves.

Common questions

Is SILKYPIX Developer Studio SE free?
Yes. Its maker describes the SE Version as free RAW development software made only for Panasonic digital cameras. Windows and macOS versions are on isl.co.jp.
What if my Panasonic camera isn't supported by SILKYPIX SE?
The maker advises buying a product version of SILKYPIX Developer Studio for cameras not on the list. darktable, RawTherapee and Photos on a Mac are free alternatives.
Can Windows open RW2 files?
Yes, after you install Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension on Windows 10 version 1903 or later. File Explorer and the Photos app then show the files, but it doesn't convert or export them.
Will my Photo Style show in the shoots.page JPEG?
No. shoots.page renders the RAW with the camera's white balance and no Photo Style. The one exception is an embedded camera JPEG of at least 90% of full size, which may be used instead.
Can a client download the JPGs without an account?
Yes. Your client opens the gallery link in any browser and downloads single photos or one ZIP, with no sign-up and nothing to pay.
