How to convert RAW to JPG

Export it from a free converter such as your camera maker's app or darktable, or upload the RAWs to a shoots.page gallery when the JPGs are for a client. Each RAW then becomes a full-size sRGB JPEG at quality 92 that your client downloads one by one or as a single ZIP, free up to 2 GB.

Pick the route by who needs the JPG

Your best route depends on who needs the files.

If you need JPGs for yourself, to edit further, print or post, convert them on your computer. You choose the look, the size and the quality setting.

If the JPGs are for a client, you can skip the converting. shoots.page is a photo-delivery web app, not a converter: when you upload RAW files to a gallery, it makes a full-size JPEG of each one, and your client downloads those JPEGs in the browser without installing anything.

Free ways to convert RAW to JPG

You can convert RAW files on your computer with free software from the camera makers, from open source projects or from your Mac:

  • Canon Digital Photo Professional 4: free from Canon for Windows and macOS, for CR2 to JPG and CR3 to JPG. Select a RAW image, click File, then Convert and save, set Save as type to Exif-JPEG and click Save.
  • Nikon NX Studio: a free download from Nikon for NEF to JPG and NRW files. The catch: you sign in with a Nikon ID on first launch, after which it works offline for 30 days. Click Export, choose JPEG under Export as and pick a folder.
  • Sony Imaging Edge Desktop: free from Sony for ARW to JPG. Its Edit function exports an adjusted RAW as JPEG or TIFF, and its Viewer develops several at once.
  • FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO: converts RAF to JPG with the camera's own processor. The catch: a compatible Fujifilm camera must be connected by USB and set to USB RAW CONV./BACKUP RESTORE.
  • SILKYPIX Developer Studio SE: free RAW software made for Panasonic cameras, for Windows and macOS. It converts RW2 to JPG for the Panasonic models listed on its site.
  • Photos on a Mac: select the photos, choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos, set Photo Kind to JPEG, pick JPEG Quality and Size, and click Export. Apple lists supported RAW cameras model by model, and macOS has basic support for DNG files (see DNG to JPG).
  • darktable and RawTherapee: free, open source RAW developers under the GPL. darktable runs on Windows, Linux and macOS 13.5 or later, with no Intel Mac builds. RawTherapee 5.13 is cross-platform.
  • Windows: Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension lets File Explorer show RAW thumbnails and the Photos app open RAW files. Microsoft says it is a codec, not an app.

Adobe Lightroom Classic (File > Export) and Photoshop's Image Processor (File > Scripts > Image Processor) convert RAW to JPEG too, on a paid Adobe plan. Adobe DNG Converter is free, but it turns RAW files into DNG, not JPEG. For a whole shoot, see how to batch convert RAW to JPG.

Can you convert RAW to JPG without losing quality?

Not entirely. A JPEG is compressed and stores 8 bits per color channel, so it always holds less than the RAW file, and the white balance and look are baked into the pixels.

What you control is how much you give up: export at full size, pick a high quality setting and use sRGB for screens. Then keep the RAW as your master copy. When shoots.page makes a JPEG from a RAW, those choices are fixed: full size or close to it, quality 92 and an embedded sRGB profile.

Let shoots.page make the JPGs for your client

  1. Pick your RAW files on the shoots.page homepage.
  2. Sign in with Google. It's free.
  3. Upload. Files go up in resumable 8 MiB parts, so a dropped connection picks up where it stopped.
  4. shoots.page makes a 480 px thumbnail and a 2000 px preview of each RAW, then a full-size JPEG in the background.
  5. Publish and share the unlisted link, with an optional password and expiry date.

With the Originals switch on, which is the default, each RAW downloads as its full-size JPEG: IMG_0001.CR2 arrives as IMG_0001.jpg. Your client saves photos one by one or all at once as a ZIP with Download all photos. The RAW switch, off by default, adds the untouched RAW files.

Want the JPEGs yourself? Open the published gallery link and choose Download all photos. Downloads inside the app give you the RAW or the 2000 px preview. The free plan's 2 GB holds about 80 RAWs at 25 MB each.

What the shoots.page JPEG is, and what it is not

  • No edits. Lightroom, Capture One and other editors keep adjustments in catalogs or .xmp sidecars, which shoots.page does not read. If you edited, export JPEGs from Lightroom or your editor and upload those.
  • A straight render. LibRaw 0.22.1 uses the camera's recorded white balance, with no lens correction and no picture style. If the RAW holds a camera JPEG of at least 90% of full size, that JPEG may be used instead.
  • Fixed output. Full size, quality 92, sRGB. No size or quality options.
  • Trimmed EXIF. Camera make, model and capture time stay; GPS, lens and exposure data do not.
  • Background processing. Until a file's full-size JPEG is ready, its download is the 2000 px preview under the same name.
  • Files that fail. Nikon High Efficiency NEFs (as shot by the Z 8), Fujifilm GFX100-series RAFs (about 102 MP), any RAW over 100 MP and any file over 1 GiB. Remove them before you publish.

If your client needs the originals as well, here is how to send the RAW files themselves.

Common questions

Is there a free RAW to JPEG converter?
Yes. Canon, Nikon and Sony offer free converters for their own files, SILKYPIX Developer Studio SE is free for Panasonic cameras, and darktable and RawTherapee are free and open source. On a Mac, Photos exports JPEGs too.
Can I convert RAW to JPG without losing quality?
Not completely, because a JPEG is compressed and 8-bit. Export at full size with a high quality setting and keep the RAW files.
Can my client get JPGs from my RAW files without installing anything?
Yes. Upload the RAWs to a shoots.page gallery and send the link. Your client opens it in a browser and downloads full-size JPEGs, with no account.
Will my Lightroom or Capture One edits show up?
No. shoots.page refuses .xmp sidecars and renders the RAW as shot. If you edited, export JPEGs from your editor and upload those.
Which RAW formats does shoots.page accept?
DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, NRW, ARW, SRF, SR2, RAF, ORF, RW2, PEF, SRW, 3FR, IIQ, KDC, MOS, MRW, ERF, RAW and X3F, plus JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF and WebP. Nikon High Efficiency NEFs don't work yet.
