How to convert CR2 to JPG

Canon's free Digital Photo Professional 4 converts it (File > Convert and save, Exif-JPEG), or upload the CR2s to a shoots.page gallery when the JPGs are for a client. Each CR2 then becomes a full-size sRGB JPEG at quality 92 that your client downloads one by one or as one ZIP, free up to 2 GB.

The short answer

Canon's free Digital Photo Professional 4 converts CR2 files. Open the folder, select the RAW photo, choose File > Convert and save, and pick Exif-JPEG as the file type.

If the JPGs are for a client rather than for you, you don't need to convert anything first. Upload the CR2 files to a shoots.page gallery: it makes a full-size JPEG of each one in the background, and your client opens the link and downloads those JPEGs without an account.

Convert CR2 to JPG in Digital Photo Professional

Canon calls DPP 4 "a free software application that allows users to process, edit, enhance, organize and analyze their RAW image files." Canon's steps to convert a photo:

  1. Select the folder that holds your CR2 files.
  2. Select the RAW image you want to convert.
  3. Click File, then Convert and save.
  4. Confirm the destination folder in Save in.
  5. Set Save as type to Exif-JPEG.
  6. Click Save.

Canon also lists batch processing of RAW images among DPP's features, for converting many CR2 files at once. The current version, DPP 4.22.10, runs on Windows 11 and on macOS 26, 15 and 14.

Other ways to open and convert CR2

  • Photos on a Mac: select your photos, choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos, set Photo Kind to JPEG, choose JPEG Quality and Size, and click Export. Apple keeps a list of supported RAW cameras for macOS 27, model by model.
  • Windows: Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension, for Windows 10 version 1903 or later, shows CR2 thumbnails in File Explorer and opens them in the Photos app. It is a codec built on LibRaw, not a converter.
  • darktable: an open source RAW developer under the GPL. Select your images, set the export module to JPEG and press export to process them in the background.
  • RawTherapee: a free, cross-platform RAW processing program under GPLv3. Version 5.13 came out on 26 July 2026.
  • Adobe Lightroom Classic: paid, on an Adobe plan with a free trial. Select the photos in Grid view, choose File > Export, set Export To Hard Drive, pick JPEG in File Settings, set Image Sizing and click Export.

The RAW to JPG overview covers every format and route.

Where CR2 fits in Canon's history

Canon explains that until the DIGIC 8 processor arrived with the EOS M50, Canon cameras saved RAW files in the .CR2 format. Canon uses lossless compression when it stores the highest-resolution image as a RAW file. Newer Canon bodies record .CR3 instead; if that's your camera, see CR3 to JPG.

Send the JPGs to a client with shoots.page

When the photos are for a client, you can skip converting on your computer:

  1. Select your CR2 files on the shoots.page homepage.
  2. Sign in with Google. It's free.
  3. Upload. Files go up in resumable 8 MiB parts, so an interrupted upload picks up where it left off.
  4. Wait for the previews, then publish the gallery.
  5. Share the unlisted link (https://shoots.page/g/...), with an optional password or expiry date.

Your client browses without an account. The Originals switch is on by default, so each RAW downloads as a full-size JPEG: IMG_0001.CR2 downloads as IMG_0001.jpg. Clients download photos one by one or all together as a ZIP with Download all photos.

To save the full-size JPEGs yourself, open the published gallery link and click Download all photos. The Free plan's 2 GB holds about 80 CR2 files at an average of 25 MB each.

What shoots.page does and does not do with a CR2

  • Straight render: LibRaw 0.22.1 applies the white balance the camera recorded and a standard demosaic, with no lens correction, no chromatic-aberration correction and no picture style.
  • Embedded camera JPEG: if your CR2 holds a camera JPEG of at least 90% of full size, that JPEG may be used instead. Portrait shots come out upright.
  • No edits: shoots.page refuses .xmp sidecars and reads no adjustments from DPP, Lightroom or Capture One. If you edited, export JPEGs from Lightroom or DPP and upload those.
  • Fixed output: full-size sRGB JPEGs at quality 92 with an embedded sRGB ICC profile. No quality, size or format options.
  • Trimmed EXIF: camera make, model and capture date and time stay; lens, exposure and GPS data are removed.
  • Processing time: until a file's full-size JPEG is ready, its download is the 2000 px preview under the same .jpg name.
  • The RAWs themselves: the RAW switch is off by default. Turn it on to send the CR2 files themselves.

Common questions

Is Canon Digital Photo Professional free?
Yes. Canon describes DPP 4 as a free software application. Version 4.22.10 runs on Windows 11 and macOS 26, 15 and 14, and opens Canon CR2 and CR3 files.
Why won't Windows open my CR2 files?
Install Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store. It adds RAW viewing to File Explorer and the Photos app on Windows 10 version 1903 or later. To get JPG files, use DPP or another converter.
Does shoots.page apply my DPP or Lightroom edits?
No. shoots.page refuses .xmp sidecars and renders the original RAW data as shot. If you edited, export JPEGs from your editor and upload those instead.
Can my client get full-size JPGs without installing software?
Yes. Your client opens the shoots.page gallery link in a web browser and downloads full-size JPEGs, without signing up or installing anything.
How many CR2 files fit in the free plan?
The Free plan's 2 GB holds about 80 RAW files at 25 MB each. Only the files you upload count toward storage; the JPEGs shoots.page makes from them don't.
