How to convert CR3 to JPG

Canon's free Digital Photo Professional 4 converts it (File > Convert and save, Exif-JPEG), or upload the CR3s to a shoots.page gallery when the JPGs are for a client. Each CR3 then becomes a full-size sRGB JPEG at quality 92 that your client downloads one by one or as one ZIP, free up to 2 GB.

The short answer

Canon's free Digital Photo Professional 4 converts CR3 files to JPEG on your computer. If you only want to see CR3 files on a Windows PC, Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension shows them in File Explorer and the Photos app.

If the photos are for a client, upload the CR3 files to a shoots.page gallery instead. It makes a full-size JPEG of each CR3, and your client views the gallery and downloads those JPEGs without an account.

Convert CR3 to JPG in Digital Photo Professional 4

DPP 4 is Canon's free application for processing, editing and converting Canon RAW files. The current version, 4.22.10, runs on Windows 11 and on macOS 26, 15 and 14. Canon's steps:

  1. Select the folder that holds your CR3 files.
  2. Select the RAW image you want to convert.
  3. Click File, then Convert and save.
  4. Confirm the destination folder in Save in.
  5. Set Save as type to Exif-JPEG.
  6. Click Save.

DPP also does batch processing of RAW images, for converting many files at once. Canon updates DPP to support new cameras, and the current list includes the EOS R1, EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R6 Mark III. If a new body's CR3 files don't open, install the latest DPP from Canon.

CR3 and C-RAW, in plain terms

Canon's DIGIC 8 processor brought the .CR3 format, starting with the EOS M50. Older Canon bodies save .CR2; for those files, see CR2 to JPG.

CR3 comes with a choice. Standard RAW at the highest resolution uses lossless compression. C-RAW records the same resolution in files that are 35 to 55 percent smaller, but it gets there with lossy compression, so some image information is thrown away. Both are CR3 files, and shoots.page accepts both, though C-RAW files have not been tested specifically.

Other ways to convert CR3

These programs open CR3 too, and most can batch convert RAW to JPG:

  • Windows: Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension for Windows 10 version 1903 or later. Microsoft says the current version includes support for CR3 files. File Explorer then shows thumbnails and metadata and the Photos app opens the files. It is a codec built on LibRaw, not a converter.
  • Photos on a Mac: select your photos, choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos, set Photo Kind to JPEG, pick JPEG Quality and Size, and click Export. Apple's RAW list for macOS 27 includes the Canon EOS R5, EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R50.
  • darktable: free and open source. Its camera list includes the EOS R5 and EOS R5 Mark II, decoded with LibRaw. Select the files and use the export module to write JPEGs in the background.
  • RawTherapee: free and cross-platform. Version 5.9 improved its CR3 support and added compressed CR3 files from cameras such as the EOS M50, R, R5 and R6. The current version is 5.13.
  • Adobe Lightroom Classic: paid, on an Adobe plan with a free trial. Select the images in Grid view, choose File > Export, set Export To Hard Drive, pick JPEG and a color space, and click Export.

CR3 to JPG for a client, with shoots.page

shoots.page is a delivery gallery, not a converter. When you upload CR3 files, it makes full-size JPEGs that your client can download.

  1. Select your CR3 files on the shoots.page homepage.
  2. Sign in with Google. It's free.
  3. Upload. Files go up in resumable 8 MiB parts and pick up where they left off if your connection drops.
  4. Let the previews generate, then publish. Add a password or expiry date if you like.
  5. Share the unlisted link.

Measured on one processor core, rendering the full-size JPEG took 1.8 seconds for an EOS R6 CR3, 2.6 seconds for an EOS R and 4.1 seconds for an EOS R5.

The Originals switch is on by default, so each CR3 downloads as a full-size JPEG, one by one or in the ZIP from Download all photos. For the JPEGs yourself, open the published link and click Download all photos; downloads inside the app give you the CR3 or the 2000 px preview. The Free plan's 2 GB holds about 80 RAWs at 25 MB each.

The trade-offs

  • No edits: shoots.page refuses .xmp sidecars and reads no catalog adjustments. The JPEG is a straight render of the RAW. If you edited, export JPEGs from Lightroom or your editor and upload those.
  • Camera rendering: LibRaw 0.22.1 uses the camera's recorded white balance and a standard demosaic, with no lens or chromatic-aberration correction and no picture style. If the CR3 holds a camera JPEG of at least 90 percent of full size, that JPEG may be used instead. Portrait shots come out upright.
  • Fixed output: full resolution or close to it, quality 92, sRGB with an embedded sRGB ICC profile. No size, quality or format options.
  • Less metadata: the JPEG keeps camera make, model and capture date and time. Exposure, lens and GPS data are removed.
  • Timing: until the full-size JPEG is ready, a download is the 2000 px preview under the same name.

If your client needs the untouched RAW data, turn on the RAW switch to send the CR3 files themselves.

Common questions

Why can't Windows open my CR3 files?
Install Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store, on Windows 10 version 1903 or later. Microsoft says its current version includes CR3 support, so File Explorer shows thumbnails and the Photos app opens the files.
Is there a free way to convert CR3 to JPG?
Yes. Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4 is free and converts CR3 files one at a time or in batches on Windows and macOS. RawTherapee, darktable and Photos on a Mac are free options too.
What is the difference between CR3 and C-RAW?
C-RAW is an option within CR3. Standard CR3 at the highest resolution is lossless; C-RAW keeps the same resolution in files 35 to 55 percent smaller by using lossy compression.
Will shoots.page apply my Lightroom or DPP edits?
No. shoots.page refuses .xmp files and reads no catalog adjustments, so the JPEG is a straight render of the RAW. Export JPEGs from your editor if you made changes.
How long does shoots.page take to process a CR3 file?
Measured on one processor core, 1.8 seconds for an EOS R6 file, 2.6 seconds for an EOS R and 4.1 seconds for an EOS R5. The 2000 px preview comes first, so the photo shows in the gallery before its full-size JPEG is ready.
