5,000 photos: 40 GB JPEG, 125 GB RAW

How many GB do you need for 5,000 photos?

5,000 photos take about 40 GB as 8 MB JPEGs, which fits shoots.page Pro with 100 GB, or 125 GB as 25 MB RAW files, which does not. They fit Pro as long as the average stays at 20 MB or less.

5,000 photos at example average sizes

Example averages, not camera specifications. Decimal GB, 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, the way shoots.page counts storage. Percentages show how much of each plan the set uses.

How the estimate works

Multiply the photo count by the average file size: 5,000 x 8 MB = 40,000 MB = 40 GB, and 5,000 x 25 MB = 125,000 MB = 125 GB. The table uses example averages, not camera specifications, so measure your own export folder and divide by the photo count. The gallery size calculator does the same sum with your numbers.

What fits Pro, and what does not

Pro stores 100 GB for USD 9 a month or USD 90 a year before tax, or EUR 8 a month or EUR 80 a year in Europe with VAT included. The break-even for 5,000 photos is 100,000 MB / 5,000 = 20 MB per photo. JPEGs clear it easily: 40 GB at 8 MB uses 40% of Pro, and even 12 MB JPEGs take 60 GB.

RAW files at 25 MB come to 125 GB, 25 GB over. The free plan's 2 GB is out of reach at every size in the table. Drafts count as well: your account holds at most 100 GB, drafts included, so 125 GB cannot be uploaded in one go.

Only the files you upload count; previews, thumbnails and the full-size JPEGs made from RAW files do not. See pricing.

Delivering 5,000 RAW files anyway

You have two ways to get a 125 GB RAW set to your client:

  • Deliver JPEGs. Export the set as JPEGs, about 40 GB at 8 MB each, and keep the RAW files in your own archive.
  • Deliver in rounds. Split the set, for example into two galleries of 2,500 RAW files, 62.5 GB each. Once your client has downloaded the first, delete it; the storage comes back after cleanup, and you upload the second. See delete and expire galleries.

Why your computer shows a different number

shoots.page counts 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes, and Apple says storage makers measure capacity in decimal too. Windows File Explorer counts in steps of 1,024 but still writes GB, so sizes look about 7% smaller there: 40 GB shows as about 37.3 GB, 125 GB as about 116.4 GB, and Pro's 100 GB as about 93.1 GB. A RAW set that Windows shows as 95 GB is about 102 GB in decimal units, over Pro.

Delivering 5,000 photos

Each gallery has one link your client opens with no account, and clients never pay. At 60 photos per page, 5,000 photos fill 84 pages, so a few galleries by part of the day or theme are easier to browse, at the same storage. Clients save originals byte for byte, one by one or as one ZIP, or take 2000 px JPEGs; RAW files reach them as full-size JPEGs unless you switch on RAW downloads for that gallery.

40 GB takes about 53 minutes to 1 hour 9 minutes to upload at 100 Mbps, or about 4 hours 27 minutes to 5 hours 47 minutes at 20 Mbps. Work out your own with the upload time calculator. If you close the tab mid-upload, press Resume upload later and only the missing parts are sent. A gallery is a delivery, not a backup, so keep your own archive.

Common questions

How many GB is 5,000 photos?
About 40 GB at an example average of 8 MB per JPEG, 15 GB at 3 MB and 60 GB at 12 MB. As 25 MB RAW files, about 125 GB.
How many GB is 5,000 RAW photos?
About 125 GB at 25 MB per file, or 250 GB at 50 MB.
Can I upload 5,000 RAW files to shoots.page?
Not at 25 MB each in one go: 125 GB is over the 100 GB an account can hold, drafts included. Deliver JPEG exports, or deliver in rounds, such as two galleries of 2,500.
Do 5,000 JPEGs fit in 100 GB?
Yes, if they average 20 MB or less. At 8 MB they take 40 GB, and at 12 MB they take 60 GB.
Is there a limit on photos per gallery?
No. There is no cap on photos per gallery or on the number of galleries; storage is the only limit.

Deliver 5,000 photos on Pro

Upload the set as a draft, check it against 100 GB, and send your client one gallery link.
